Subaru Crosstrek Common Problems

For nearly 75 years, Subaru has built their reputation on dependable and capable vehicles. From legendary nameplates like the Forester and WRX to newer additions to the lineup like the Crosstrek.

Since its debut in 2012, the Crosstrek has carved itself out a place as one of the most versatile crossovers on the market for various buyers. Although these models are generally dependable platforms, there are still a few common problems that owners and prospective buyers should know.

The Crosstrek has gone through three iterations since its release over 13 years ago. In this article, we’ll cover all three generations and specific problems that affect each one.

Steering Issues

Some owners of earlier generation Crosstreks have reported issues in maintaining control while steering on particularly slick road surfaces, such as snow or ice. While there isn’t a specific source of these issues, there have been some reports of the vehicle tending to fishtail when accelerating in these conditions.

These issues have sometimes been traced back to the subpar tires included with the vehicle, which other times it’s been the result of improper alignment.

Motor Failure

Although it’s not a particularly frequent problem, there have been reports of certain years of the Crosstrek XV experiencing engine failure with little to no prior warning.

Subaru recalled certain 2013 Crosstrek XVs due to this issue, which often stemmed from valve springs that have fractured, leaving the engine unable to operate properly and potentially leading to irreparable failure that requires replacement.

Brake Light Problems

One of the more commonly seen issues on Crosstrek models is problems with the brake lights, particularly the switch that toggles the lights when the pedal is pressed. This issue is generally caused by contaminants blocking the switch, and can be remedied with a replacement.

Subaru recalled Crosstreks from 2013-2017 to replace the brake light switch with a less problematic version of the component.

Rapid Oil Consumption

One of the more serious issues seen on Crosstreks is issues with excessive oil consumption, largely due to faulty PCV valves that allow for oil to enter the combustion chamber. If enough oil is able to enter the combustion chamber while parked, it can lead to complete failure of the engine.

Crosstrek models from 2013-2018 were recalled by Subaru in order to mitigate this dangerous issue. Subaru’s stated “acceptable range” for oil consumption is ⅓ quart of oil per every 1,200 miles. If you notice consumption above this range, it’s vital to have your engine inspected by a trusted Subaru professional as soon as possible.
